That's what has me. I don't know what kind of change is soft, but we are soft now. The other animals would be too, but we're the only ones capable of flight . . . Eventually.
Hmm... Forest does seem to make the most sense. Combining the "out of range", I suppose that the "softer change" would be... a change in perspective? Which feeds into the phrase "missed the forest for the trees". Riddles like their plays on words, after all...
It fits with what we are now, since flying is an easy way to change perspective. Between underground, like a cave or a burrow, and a forest, which do you think?
