Let's focus on the last two lines. We should be seeing something other than trees, and it is something that has to be found.

Hmm... Forest does seem to make the most sense. Combining the "out of range", I suppose that the "softer change" would be... a change in perspective? Which feeds into the phrase "missed the forest for the trees". Riddles like their plays on words, after all...

It fits with what we are now, since flying is an easy way to change perspective. Between underground, like a cave or a burrow, and a forest, which do you think?
