Apple's Heart

Your arrival is marked by the feel of sand under your feet, with the sound and smell of the ocean wafting in from behind you. A dampness hangs in the air and the sky is overcast. Directly in front of you the sand fades into a grassy hill, on top of which a white castle rests. To the left, a little ways off, you can see tall sandstone cliffs. Off to the right is a large field of sunflowers that stretches out into the distance. There are no paths or signs anywhere to be seen.

"Yes, I'll be just a moment. Please wait here."

The second guard disappears into the castle grounds. The first one watches him go, and then turns back to you.

"A seed, you said? For what?"

I planted a rose seed that I found in a little bottle on the beach.

"Roses? Ah, that sounds so nice. We don't get to see any of the gardens, standing out here all day."

Really? That isn't fair at all . . .

"Yeah, but it's not so bad. I've still got a great view of the ocean!"

He gestures out to the ocean right as the other guard comes back with a bucket full of fresh water. "Here you are, miss."

Even so . . . maybe I'll plant more of them if I have time later.

[takes the bucket from the other guard, bowing lightly to him] Thank you very much!

The guards both smile.

"I'd like that very much, miss. I do hope your plants grow up lovely!"

I hope so too. Thank you again!

[heading back to the rose planting to water it!]

It's still where you left it. I'm sure it's happy for the water.

[If it's not magically growing via heart magic after watering, she'll just head back down to the beach to hunt up a few more seeds to plant]

It is not magically growing via heart magic. Plants still take time to grow! But getting more seeds works just fine. There are plenty of the bottles around the beach.

[gathering enough to plant a small garden with!! And then heading back to the rose planting to get to work on that]

When you reach your grassy spot where you're growing the garden, you'll find the first gatekeeper there.

"Hey there! I'm on my break. I thought I'd help out."

Oh, great! Do you think you can help me digging some holes for these little guys?

"Not a problem. I got two spades from the greenhouse, too."

He holds one out for you.

[!! Takes the spade eagerly]

Thank you! This will make it all go much faster.

"I thought it might. I saw you had dirt on your hands earlier. Were you planning on digging everything just like that...?"

He sets to work digging holes.

Yes . . . ? I don't mind doing it that way. It's nice to feel the dirt between your fingers sometimes.

[digging too! Every couple of holes she stops to drop seeds in and give them a decent splash of water]

"It just seems a little messy too, is all."

Digging in the dirt is always going to be a little messy though.

He laughs and waters the seeds he planted.

"Yeah, but it's even more messy when you use your hands."

It's not so bad . . . I have a lot of good memories about working in the earth like this.

"Good memories? From home?"

Yup! My grannie taught me all about how to raise a garden well.

"Ah, that sounds so nice...we've got some really great gardens inside the castle. The people who take care of them really love the plants, and it shows."
