Maybe it is the last night before the cabin fades away for good, and the knight does not leave its premises quickly enough. As a result, the knight disappears with the cabin.
Uh... since the knight has been dead all along, he's only recently realized that! And he's been stuck in a cursed ghost cabin, only being able to go out at dusk, and he's finally found that out after years of wondering why he is stuck in the cabin. It turns out he's killed too much, so he has to atone for it somehow by finding a specific person with the time the cabin gives him! Unfortunately he appears as a dusk monster to the outside world.
There's also time restraint, I guess? As the years have gone by obviously he's running out of time, because the person he's looking for will eventually die too. and then he runs out of time and is stuck forever alone.
"The dead knight has been dead all along. Obviously. But he has only just realized this. He is also cursed to reside in a ghost cabin in the woods, and he is only allowed to leave it during dusk. The reason being that he fought and killed so much. He has only just realized this, too. In order to set himself free he must atone by finding a specific person. Unbeknownst to the knight, he appears to the world as a monster. Many years have gone by, and the knight realizes that his time is running out. After all, the person he is searching for will inevitably die at some point, and the cabin is bound to disappear, too.
Eventually time runs out and the knight disappears, forever alone."
"The knowledge came to the knight suddenly, without warning, and it shook him to his very core. He had been cursed, you see, because he failed to protect the person he needed to most—and now he paid the price with his death, made to haunt a cabin which kept him in in recurring dreams and nightmares until dusk. Dusk... yes, dusk. The only time of day he could break the spelll momentarily and remember what he was supposed to do now, the only time he could actually leave the cabin. In order to set himself free, he had to atone by finding that person he had failed... and so he left the cabin, searching once again in the little time he had until nightfall, and as usual he appeared as a monstrous beast to all those he came across, attacked upon sight and with little luck. Worst of all: Many years have gone by, and the knight realizes that his time is running out. After all, the person he is searching for will inevitably die at some point, and the cabin is bound to disappear, too.
Eventually time runs out and the knight disappears, forever alone."
Thanks! But I think the end could use some work, since the suspense just cuts off. I'm not that great at describing something terrifying like... well, being stuck in in a dark space forever with no way out. Do one of you want to try?
[ he kind of went into detail with how he imagines it anyway but ]
I think you just described it... His time runs out, and the knight is forever trapped in darkness." Maybe with a "And at dusk you can still hear him wandering"... or calling or something like that.
