Maybe he had his blood removed, and then the pieces of his body just decayed and fell off from natural decomposition.

One night, a baker forgot to properly extinguish his oven after a day of work. The resulting fire soon spread among several houses. The hero, noble and true, entered one of the houses to answer the cries of a helpless innocent child inside. The building was already full of smoke, but he was able to carry the child to safety. Unfortunately, he ran back inside the house to look for further survivors, and was overwhelmed finally by the smoke and soot he breathed. He collapsed and thankfully fell unconscious before he was burned to ash. The building eventually buckled as the structure of the house crumbled. Debris fell on him, scattering his ashen body into so many pieces. He was recovered later from the wreckage by other survivors after the flames had been extinguished. In order to prevent this, he should have realized the fire had advanced to a point he would likely be overwhelmed and either worn something to protect himself from the smoke or had simply accepted there was probably no one else in the house.
