If there's nothing else out of the ordinary outside of the covers that he'd notice while doing this, he's going to head to the gate at the end of the path.]

The gate has a basket of blank scrolls hanging from it. It's closed, with no latch or lock, but there's a small circular recess jutting out at about the height where one would normally be. You could put something in it, maybe.

[D-Doesn't need the matchbox. Picks up one of the scrolls and seems to debate on what to write for a moment, then:

There's a sudden spark--the lantern flares before your eyes, brightly enough that you might have to look away--you hear a soft click.

When you look back at the gate, you'll find it's swung open.
