You find yourself in a medium-sized traditional Japanese-style room: tatami on the floor, shoji screens for the walls, etc. It smells slightly musty from disuse. There is a wooden door in one corner. Candles on stands like the ones in the ring provide plenty of light — definitely enough to see that the room is oddly empty save for a central display:

A life-size doll in a kimono lies on the floor, a low lacquered table on either side of her shoulders. On the right table is a brush and supplies for mixing ink. There are two sticks of ink: black and red. On the left table is a scalpel, a pair of rusty garment shears, a pair of forceps, a needle, and a spool of crimson thread.

The doll is, of course, completely featureless. Her kimono has been pulled open in front just enough for a gaping hole in the center of her chest to be visible.

The Masked Lady's voice rings out: "But she continued to weep, hiding her face from him with one of her long sleeves. "Young miss," he said again, as gently as he could, "please, please listen to me! This is no place for a young lady at night! Do not cry, I implore you!— only tell me how I may be of some help to you!" Slowly she rose up, but turned her back to him, and continued to moan and sob behind her sleeve. He laid his hand lightly upon her shoulder, and pleaded with her… then that young miss turned round, and dropped her sleeve, and stroked her face with her hand; and the man saw that she had no eyes or nose or mouth, and he screamed and ran away.

… or something like that, anyway. What a cruel man, leaving that young woman to her distress! This poor doll seems to have lost her face as well. Will you help her find it again~? Or will you give her a new one? Let's see… she'll need two eyes, a nose, and a mouth. If you could find her lost heart as well, I suppose that would be a bonus…!

You may use the tools I have given you in this room, or you may explore further in the hope of finding others… But I can't guarantee what will happen in either case, ufufufu…"

The bare electric bulbs hanging from the ceiling flicker constantly, but give off enough light to see by. Both the floor and the walls of the hallway are made of scuffed wooden boards that have definitely seen better days. A few framed woodblock prints line the walls.

[hmmm... tries checking behind the woodblock prints, or just examining them more closely in general.]

They look like some pretty high-quality Ukiyoe prints, if you're the type to be a connoisseur of such things. They all feature women, true beauties of the style. Or so you might think, if you could see their faces — the strange part is that the woman is turned away or somehow concealing her face in every single picture.

There's something on the wall behind the pictures… or rather, in the wall. It looks like the frame was carefully concealing gouges in the wood. They look like scratch marks. Specifically, like someone was using their fingernails to claw madly at the wall…

[whistles and pokes at the scratch marks a bit; anything else to be found here?]

... This is getting a little creepy.

Seriously. They should've just gotten the walls redone if they wanted to hide those that badly.

At the end of the hallway is a lacquered wooden end table with a vase on it. What might have once been a lovely arrangement of flowers has long-since dried up and died. To your left is a traditional sliding door, while to your right is a western-style door. The door on the left has a fogged-glass window set into it with a rusted nameplate underneath.

[hesitates, glances at Lloyd and Guy, then picks up the vase to shake it.]

Congratulations, the flowers have disintegrated.
