Well, they could have fallen over and hit their head. Or they could have starved to death or dehydrated... they could have been bitten by a snake or stung by a scorpion. They might have been bitten by an animal then the wound got infected and they died. They might have run into a pit trap...

Probably if someone killed them, that person isn't around any more, since the skeleton is a skeleton and not a body.
