Furthermore, that position would afford you the authority to change the ways of this mafia, wouldn't it? You can make it a system that respects honesty and integrity and the safety of civilians.

Your character does not seem so weak as to be altered by your surroundings. I believe that you have the strength to hold true to your convictions. There may be those who think ill of you for what you may do, but if you succeed then you will have achieved a lasting change that will eliminate the system that has brought you such fear and pain.

If it gets changed, so it's less bad, then nobody has to hate you for it, right? ... And I'm already going to punch all the bad guys. Or yell at them. So they'll all go away, and then only the good people will be left and they can decide what to do.
