Room 4

You find yourselves in a well acquainted parlor while the storm rages on outside. Mother's voice resounds from somewhere unseen.

"Dear Mother will be with you in a moment, my children. But until then, please do try to become well acquainted with one another."

Easygoing as well, I see.

I hope the evening is treating you well, at any rate--?

Other than the dreadful weather, I must admit I've no complaints. And you?

I've been quite well myself--no complaints here, either.

[considering, eyeing closely]

[blinking back, meeting his eyes with a little bemusement] --Yes?

You're an honest type, aren't you? Nothing to hide at all?

Not that I am aware of, at any rate.

Are we to get to know you better than you know yourself, then?

Or perhaps to ferret out that which we might not be consciously aware of.

You're relatively new here, aren't you? Do you recall your family at all?

Unusual, but not unpleasant.

Would you call yourself an affectionate person?

I wouldn't say extremely so.

Are you cold, then?

I suspect that's something others who know me could judge better. I don't try to be.

You strike a balance, then. I suppose that's not a bad thing.

The extremes have their uses, but balance tends to serve better, in my experience.

A sensible philosophy.

[taps his card]

You don't serve a master, do you?

Not unless you'd refer to the church as a master.

Hmm . . . a religious man. I see. Thank you.

Mmmm.

You wouldn't happen to have asked anyone else about family, would you?

[shaking head] I hadn't, no.

[nodding slowly] I see. Thank you anyway.

[inclining his head] And you too, madam.
