Tonight, like many nights, you’re sleeping outside. Sneasel is curled up against your stomach. Under your hand, his side rises and falls with slow, even breaths. It’s peaceful. Even nicer is feeling the warmth of your sister at your back, her arm slung loosely around your waist as she dozes off. The blanket is sliding down a little, so you pull it back up.

The stars are bright tonight.

The man chuckles, and the very sound makes your teeth grind together. “So it’s true. You’ve become weak. If you’d stayed with me, you wouldn’t have fallen victim to the weakness of protecting another person — you’d have become the perfect trainer.”

Another voice, childish but angry. “That’s wrong!” Your heart leaps in your throat in disbelief and wonder.]
