Wako's Heart

You are standing in the middle of the main street of a sizable downtown area.

The early morning sun hangs low in the east. The air is salty and fresh – and oh man is your nose sharp! You can smell the people who came in here with you from yards away! Other stuff smells that strong, too! There is a spring breeze in the air. How do you know it’s spring? You just do. It’s the vibe here. Tropical trees and flowers grow in window boxes and small gardens. There are fairly standard shops (a movie theater! A book store! Small clothing boutiques! And so on), with trucks, cars, and bicycles parked at the curbs. There are no people or animals in sight, but there’s birdsong hanging in the air. It seems to be coming in every direction.

Oh. And you’re dressed like stripper clowns.

[ PS! As the memory fades, you're in the big dining room you've seen in earlier memories. There's the window you just came through -- which looks out on to the ocean, not the kitchen, even though you just came through it from the kitchen -- and a door on the opposite side. The dining room table is laid out with delicious breakfast foods of many types. ]

[picking himself up]

Ah, somebody else cooked this time.

[ And cooked a lot! Orange juice and water and milk in pretty carafes, with wine glasses to drink from, and then there's rolls and french toast and eggs and bacon and ham and pancakes and waffles and syrup and jam and toast and, well, it goes on. There's also pretty flowers on the table! ]

[eats some french toast because why not]

[ A memory is beaming into your head!

[ It’s that same table, covered in a load of breakfast food. Wako, Takuto, and Sugata are sitting down, and two girls in maid uniforms with ears and a tail.

Takuto: Hey, it’s not funny! My luggage was sent ahead to the dorms, but I thought I’d figure out something when I got here. This is great! Can I get seconds?
Sugata: And you missed the last ferry, so you just swam across the sea?
Takuto: What was I supposed to do, miss the opening ceremony?
Sugata: If that’s what you were worried about, you could have taken the morning ferry and made it with time to spare.
Takuto: Eh?
Sugata, laughing: Incredible… you’re incredible, Takuto Tsunashi.
Takuto: Well, I got to enjoy this breakfast, right? And I got here alive anyway.
Sugata: You’d be dead if Wako hadn’t found you.
Takuto: Hm?
Wako: Takuto Tsunashi. Why did you come to school on this island?
Takuto: To do something amazing!
Sugata: Something amazing?
Takuto: Yeah! A fabulous school life!
Wako: Like, singing out your youth?
Takuto: Exactly, that! The cerulean sky and azure sea! Ou want to sing out yer youth, ya gotta go to Southern Cross Island! … is what grandpa said.
Wako: Your grandfather?
Takuto: Mm. He said this was a good school. I’m really glad I came. That’s what I think when I look at you guys.
Sugata: You know, Wako was so worried, she came to see you this morning. Nice, huh?
Wako: Cut that out.
Sugata: So, Takuto Tsunashi, pardon my rudeness, but… have you had your first kiss yet?

Wako spits her drink out.

Takuto: It’s on the list of defining moments of youth I plan to go through!
Wako: What kind of question is that?
Sugata: Would you count mouth-to-mouth as a kiss?
Takuto: Mouth-to-mouth, huh?
Wako: Seriously, stop it!

The memory blurs slightly to…

Wako: Okay, done! I’m home.
Takuto: Hey, um…
Wako: Mm?
Takuto: I heard you saved my life. Thanks.
Wako: See you at school. ]

... heh.

[tries eating something else]

[ Nothing. ]

[looks around]

Where to next?

[ There's nothing but the window you came in and the door. ]

[tries the door]

[ Now you’re in a small (for this house, anyway) bedroom. There are toy robots and cars on a shelf, model rockets and airplanes hanging from the ceiling, and crayon drawings on the walls of brightly colored animals. Except... those animals are moving. One of them -- a monkey -- asks in a high, childish voice:

"What do you have to do more than anything? What do you want to do more than anything?" ]
