You are standing in the middle of the main street of a sizable downtown area.

The early morning sun hangs low in the east. The air is salty and fresh – and oh man is your nose sharp! You can smell the people who came in here with you from yards away! Other stuff smells that strong, too! There is a spring breeze in the air. How do you know it’s spring? You just do. It’s the vibe here. Tropical trees and flowers grow in window boxes and small gardens. There are fairly standard shops (a movie theater! A book store! Small clothing boutiques! And so on), with trucks, cars, and bicycles parked at the curbs. There are no people or animals in sight, but there’s birdsong hanging in the air. It seems to be coming in every direction.

Oh. And you’re dressed like stripper clowns.

[ You’re in a large schoolroom with orderly desks. The opposite wall is composed entirely of windows, with a walkway beyond.

But the students’ desks are covered with scented candles and cherry blossoms, the teacher’s desk has been replaced by an enormous four-poster bed with diaphanous curtains, and there are spinning roses at the edge of your vision.

Also, your clothes have disappeared and you’re stark naked. ]

This memory takes place around the same big table as the last memory. It’s a big birthday party, filled with adults and kids. Sugata is eleven (and obviously sitting at the place of honor); Wako is ten. Everyone sings happy birthday and cuts cake, and everyone is very happy and childlike…

But it ends, jarringly, with a thought from Wako: We’re never going to leave. ]

[ PS! As the memory fades, you're in the big dining room you've seen in earlier memories. There's the window you just came through -- which looks out on to the ocean, not the kitchen, even though you just came through it from the kitchen -- and a door on the opposite side. The dining room table is laid out with delicious breakfast foods of many types. ]

[ The totem pole six heads high, with a variety of animal faces. The paint is fairly new – it can’t be more than a year old. There’s a hole it might have gone in once dug into the dirt and sand behind it, but now it’s lying on its side.

It is a dark and stormy night – like, edge of a hurricane dark and stormy. Little Wako – about eight years old – is with a blue-haired boy about the same age. The totem pole is toppling over in the muddy ground, but they’re struggling to stand it straight again. They’re failing. Hard.

As it starts to fall on them, the boy pushes Wako out of the way. He gets crushed under the totem pole.

Wako screams, and something on her chest lights up pink – a mark in the shape of a Y. The next instant, the boy is floating off the ground in a pink bubble. Wako faints. The memory ends. ]
