[ The hill in the Ring dissolves, leaving you alone with your team in a soft, featureless grey space. The Dog's genderless, gentle "voice" speaks into all of your minds, less anxious and more confident now; confiding. ]

My name is The Dog Who Dies At The End Of The Story. I don't remember the name I had before that, and I didn't know what this one was either, not till I chose a new Master. I don't think I was supposed to do that, but I did, so here we are.

I understand being a dog, and sometimes dogs die. But I don't understand dying, even when I know what it is. . . and in order to make a choice about it, I need to catch answers. I've died over and over and not understood yet. Maybe some of you have, too. I wanted . . . to ask what you thought. . . ?

Thank you. . . I won't be able to answer for a little while, so if you would. . . please answer for me.

[ You know instinctively that while the Dog will not answer your words for a while, once it asks you its questions you will be able to speak your answers when you've reached a consensus and be heard. ]

Saying there's a "time" for it feels wrong. It happens, yes, but I don't think it happens in time. It just does, or doesn't as it will.

It does. I dislike the sound of it. Death happens. Sometimes you choose it, sometimes you don't. Sometimes you know it's coming, sometimes it's unexpected. It's as inevitable as breathing, but that's okay. It shows us that we shouldn't take our lives for granted, because we don't know when they'll be gone. It can be sad, heartbreaking, bittersweet, peaceful, or cruel. Any death could be a number of different things to someone. Every person might have something they would die for, or nothing they would risk death for. Maybe that's too indecisive, but I don't know if we'll all have a response for this one.

[goes quiet for a long moment, mulling it over]

...No, it's a good answer.

It's an inevitable part of life, but it's not what's important. What is important is what you're choosing to do with your life now. Death shouldn't control what you do.

We could try an answer like that. I could try to add in what everyone else has said. It seems odd, that the Dog would ask about death like this when it should know better than us.

...Dog's story requires it to die, but that doesn't mean it was meant to understand why. And it's died for very foolish reasons before and didn't seem to ever understand why.

The fact that Dog is asking now means it realizes that death does have significance, even if it doesn't know what that significance is. Even if you're familiar with death, that doesn't mean you ever truly understood it.

Mhm...We can discuss Dog's story more later. I imagine it'll be an important topic the next time our group has a meeting.

I feel like talking about it here might help...but it's difficult. And we don't all agree.

It sounds as though we're at the end of the story.

Even if it's what everyone wants, it doesn't mean that's what's going to happen. But here of all places, it might come true. If it did, though, would we just be playing make believe like children do?

I don't know. I thought death here was only a temporary inconvenience, but we learned it isn't the case, and the Dog knows too.

...We should see what the Dog wants.
