You venture forth into the marketplace to do your daily shopping. There are wonders untold there, or at least some cheap swords and maybe fresh fruit if you're lucky. This time, however, you're discussing the wares with a bookseller when you catch sight of a teenage girl stealing from the butcher's stall. You follow her back to an alley and see that she's feeding her ill-gotten gains to a small tentacle-kitten which she seems to have adopted as a pet.

Both the girl herself and the tentacle-kitten are rather scrawny, and she's wearing ragged clothes. Faced with this dilemma, what do you do?

Stealing isn't right, but I don't want to see her punished either.

If it were up to me, I would bring her and the tentacle-kitten back to the stall and have her apologize to the butcher and see if she could work for him as an apprentice since he would then be responsible for seeing to her health and she would learn skills that would allow her to be a productive member of society later and keep her off the streets.

An... apprentice is a person who is learning a trade from a skilled employer, having agreed to work for a fixed period at low wages.

That's a good plan. If she has a job, she can feed the kitty and herself.

Maybe we can offer to pay for the meat she stole as well?

I don't think so, but she'll be able to take care of the kitten better this way.

The urchin is anxious about this plan, but she's willing to give it a shot. The butcher has been looking for an apprentice anyway, so with your advisement he takes the girl under his wing to begin training her. The tentacle-kitten will have all the scraps it needs.
