Then she sets it down on the sand, gives you one last longing glance, and walks into the water. There's a splash, and she's gone.

Your item is a pair of salt and pepper shakers.

That's easy enough. They're salt and pepper shakers. You use them to add flavor to your food.

They can hold other spices and seasoning as well, but the function is still the same.

What magic does she expect from a broom and a pan full of dirt? She is being childish.

She is, but...hm. If she wants magic out of it, maybe it's a witch's broom, and the dirt is actually some kind of fairy dust that can do magic things? The witch flies around with her special fairy dust, sprinkling it around where she feels like it's needed.

You can submit that if you like; it sounds fantastical enough.

It feels like it needs something else, though. Witches, fairies, magic - wait. It's the word 'broom' that's getting me. Flying stick?

Call it "balayette." It means the same thing, a little brush, but it has a prettier sound than "broom."

This [she points to the broom] is a 'balayette'. It's used by witches in order to fly around! It's powered by magic, and this end [indicating the brush] can be lit up if you want to fly faster. They come in all kinds of colors and shapes, and some of them even have cushions on them to make flying more comfortable.

This [picking up the dustpan] is a tray that's used to store fairy dust! It has special paint on it that helps keep the fairy dust in place. Some of them come with covers to keep it from coming out when a witch or a fairy is busy.

It's easier to handle when it's open, though, because a witch riding on a balayette can just pick up a pinch of fairy dust and sprinkle it whenever she needs a bit more 'oomph' to a spell, or when she wants to cast magic on someone without using her own power.
