Laid out in front of you is a pile of fluff! If you poke it, prod it, nudge it, or smash it, you’ll find that it keeps it shape.

You can hear the muffled voice of the Velveteen Rabbit, speaking much more clearly now:

Oh, honestly...

Animals are nice, but for a friend you usually need a human being!

Not at all! An animal companion can be very faithful and offers a companionship that can be hard found in most people.

Do you really think so?

It's difficult to hold a proper conversation with an animal.

Although I suppose it might be different here.

I suppose sometimes, but darling, you make it sound like you haven't found very nice people.

I should think so. And there are plenty of people who do not fall under the umbrella of "human" as well.

Could those animal companions serve tea?

... I am sure it could have been possible if they were trained.

Indeed, though I haven't gotten us any closer to answering the question.

[lifts a hand, wiggles her fingers admonishingly]

I suppose a horse is an elegant enough creature, and useful besides, but with only hooves, it would have trouble serving tea...

Perhaps if a dog holds a plate in their mouth and you balance cups of tea on it...?

The lack of opposable thumbs would make that difficult for most animals, I imagine.

Goodness. Would that be sanitary?

Too true! What a dilemma.

Perhaps not but it would still be serving tea.

Perhaps we will have to leave serving the tea to others, and focus on different qualifications for our animal companion.

And just what do you think those qualifications should be?

I suppose a well-trained dog would be an acceptable friend.

Loyal and friendly and compassionate are qualities that are always desired in friends.
