I believe they are intended as representations, as the hawk was to this. They are not the best representations; for I would not count a duck and a hawk the same. If the book is then intended to be the mind, then the rose must be the heart.

Oh, then my vote goes for the rose! I may not be a smart man but! I do understand matters of the heart.
