Now then, we've got all of our answers. It's time to review what we know...
The hero was not made of flesh-and-blood at the time of their death. The hero did not transform of their own will, nor was it caused by something they were fighting or monsters or a malevolent force.
Changing to and from a flesh-and-blood form is not a natural part of the hero's physiology.
Now, from this we need to put together... how they died, why they died, and how their death could have been prevented...
All right ... so we should focus on our submission, I guess.
My thoughts are that it was an accident. The hero wasn't being careful, and that's what led to the messy expiration. If it was transformative, whatever it did wasn't careful. But that wasn't because of something malevolent, it probably just happens.
Our hero was on a quest for some powerful magic that would make them better at being a hero. Despite all the warnings about going it alone, or not researching it, the hero was stubborn; he could do anything he set his mind to, right? So instead of listening, the hero set out. There was no research, no idea of what was coming up ahead.
When the hero got to the old abandoned building where there was the magic hidden inside, he rushed in ... and up some stairs. However, the stairs themselves had a security system on them that would turn anyone into stone. Just as the hero reached the top step, he instantly turned into stone, and went falling down.
That's where he was found later.
There was a way to take care of the security system, of course, but he didn't research or even try to ask for help. Being less reckless, relying on others, and accepting that he shouldn't stubbornly do something that might not even be right would've saved him.

Re: DISCUSS
As far as preference goes, I'm partial to non-pointless deaths. Whaddaya think?
