[raises an eyebrow and heads for that woman in a cloak to see who that is]

[because wow normality around something so dark is pretty morbid, and someone was recently executed, maybe she knows]

She's a rather pretty woman, tall and thoughtful. She glances at him, but just raises an eyebrow instead of speaking.

Excuse me, ma'am. Can you tell me who was just executed here?

She tosses her head with a shrug, somehow managing to not dislodge her hood in the process. The corner of her lip turns up in the beginnings of a sneer. "Does it matter? The purges have stepped up lately; it hardly matters who it was."

The purges?

She outright sneers this time, her fingers tightening on her elbows. "I'm sure you'll see a new set soon enough, if you're brave enough to stick around, little boy."

Will you?

"I'd rather not, if it's all the same to you."

Why not? Is there something to be worried about these "purges"? After all, who would it be?

She snorts, shaking her head. "If you want to stay, that's your decision."

She turns on her heel and walks off; as she does, the sound of church-bells starts again: three loud, solemn chimes. At the base of the guillotine, a line is forming.

[Three loud chimes, when before it was fourteen, hmm...]

[what do the people in the line look like?]

They're faceless.

Literally, in fact -- though there's a long line of them, dressed in all sorts of different clothes (all of Aather's colors, in fact), their faces are smooth and blank.

[oh that's not creepy at all]

[let's move to find someplace to observe that isn't so close to the gallows]

As you move away, the line begins to walk up to the guillotine, each kneeling in turn at the device. Though there's no one there to man it, the blade falls and resets for each of them: shnk!

Each head falls and rolls, then both body and head vanish, leaving room for the next person.

[ugh this is horribly disgusting, but going to keep a count of how many are executed]

There is fourteen total -- by the end, though, the last six or seven of them are small and delicate, maybe about the same height and build as a certain teammate, dressed in plain white prisoner's smocks.

[plain white prisoner's smocks...?]

[... hmmm, time to explore a bit more, going to grab a nearby passerby] Excuse me, could you tell me where the prison is?

This person looks a bit like a cross between Dove and Canary, and she blinks for a moment, as if confused. "The prison? You'd need to be at the castle for that, you--" Her eyes slide to the guillotine and then quickly away. "You look around for it yourself, sir, I don't really think--"

She pulls her arm free and flees.

... That was certainly something.

[let's head back to the castle, then! it's time to look for a prison]

There is the way you came, if you wish to go back to those doors.

[looks around for an alternate path first — I mean a prison's pretty nasty, why have a path go through fabulous first?]

There don't appear to be any; the roses are too thick. If you linger in the city, though, you might hear the sound of a woman singing, somewhere out of sight.

[...? let's go investigate that first!]

It takes wandering around a couple of corners and down an alley, but eventually you come to a clearing where a pretty young woman is singing; she is surrounded by small birds, who all appear to be listening to her song.
