Tiger's Eye

[ You’re in a corporate boardroom… of sorts. There’s no door and the walls are all glass, open to a clear blue sky, but if you look out the glass and down, there’s nothing but a layer of fluffy white clouds. If you look up, nothing but sky and sun. The room is dominated by an odd table that hasn’t decided what shape it wants to be – there’s a square corner on one end, but the rest of it is wavy and ellipsoid. The chairs are swiveling leather office chairs, quite comfortable and quite ordinary. The tea service and digestives have come along as well.

In the middle of the table are three typewriters with paper primed and ready to go, the mailbox, and a typewritten.

Dear Heron:

We’ve gotten some very good submissions so far, but not enough to go to print! Talk amongst yourselves and write a letter asking for help solving a problem that you face, as a team or as individuals. And don’t be afraid to send in more than one. We’re such a popular feature!

I haven't written one, but I'm sure we can think of something.

[smiles at her. It probably looks a little predatory despite his best intentions] I'm Pumpkin! Do you have a problem we can write about?

I'm Susan. And I don't know... I'm new, so most of my problems are along the lines of "I don't know anything." So it's difficult to know how to help.

Maybe that's a problem we can talk about in a letter, then! Everyone's new once, so it's something everyone can relate to and maybe give advice about.

"Dear Aather: I'm new and confused. I have family here, but I can tell they're holding back on explaining our home situation and how they've been coping here for months. I know it's just because they want to give me a chance to settle in, but it's hard when I have so little information. What should I do?"

And we could sign it, Another Anxious Amnesiac, or something. That would fit the tone, wouldn't it?

Right! Maybe replace "family" with "people I know" so it's less obvious who it is and then I think you've got a great letter here.

[writes that down]

Do you want to try and come up with another one, or shall we turn that in and leave it at that?

I can definitely do another one! Um let's see...

"Dear Aather:

I'm in love with someone here but I don't know if he loves me back and our situation's really complicated with bad memories even if I loved him in those too. I've been trying to just play it cool and focus on what's in front of us but it's hard not to feel weird about it. I'm sure lots of people are in the same situation, how do you deal with it? Or how would you??

Nope! I've seen our secrets get shared against our will, but that's the closest.

They really just do every nasty thing they can think of, don't they?

Excellent, excellent, this is enough material to keep us going for quite some time. Now, get to work answering the letters!

The mailbox makes a coughing noise, and up comes a… large newspaper. Each column starts with one of these letters. The space below each letter is blank… for now.

The typewriter keeps going:

Just stick your letter in the mailbox – “Dear So-and-So” – and it will find its way into print. Oh, but we don’t want to give bad advice. If you see someone giving advice you disagree with, feel free to correct them. Remember, you get paid by the word… no, paid by the letter… no, brevity can be the soul of wit… no, rewarded based on productivity… aha! Giving a good answer or many good answers will help you win! But the newspaper business can be about entertainment, so there’ll be a reward for pleasing your peers as well. Yes, those are good criteria.

Now, get to work.

Yes. It’s a magical newspaper that will update in Aather-realtime with the contents of the linked DP post, so your characters can snipe at other letter writers and call their advice terrible.

This person's being really rude to me! I don't know a lot of things because my memories don't include them so I was asking when I didn't know things and they told me that it was annoying and if I don't know something just don't answer.

That's not very kind of them at all. Look, if you want to know what a word means and nobody will answer, you can just ask me, all right? I don't guarantee I'll know either, but if I do I'll certainly tell you.

It's not that, it's just that I don't want people being rude to me just because I'm trying to learn!
