The whole ones are given for duping the other team completely, I expect, but I would rather have a half diamond than no diamond at all. A piece can be set into metal, with backing over the cut side, like as a brooch or a stud.
Ah! I'm not good enough with metal to do that yet, I think. My only jewelry-making experience has been 'wrap some wires around something to attach it to a necklace'... still, it's nice to have the materials on hand.
Well, just looking at them makes sense too. I do the same, but mostly with things like— jars of the floating sparkles, or other stuff like that. ... Although I guess if jewels just floated around in the air I'd probably have more of those too.

If you're careful and don't handle them too roughly, you can shoo them into a jar, and they'll stay there until you let them out.
