IOLITE

Your room has various hanging scrolls, in a language that is familiar... yet you can't seem to read it. When you look at the round table in the center, there are various scrolls, and five small boxes with a small hole in the center, as well as a small collection of white marbles.

On one box, you see a SWORD, just looking at it gives you a sense of STRENGTH.

On another, you see a SHIELD, just looking at it gives you the safe feeling of great DEFENSE.

On another, you see the carvings of what looks like a gust of WIND, looking at it gives you the feeling of great SPEED.

On yet another, you see a carving of a pair of PLAYING CARDS, you find yourself feeling a little LUCKY today.

On the final box, there is a flowing RIVER, and you feel in better HEALTH.

If you count the number of marbles, there are only 50 of them. Each box looks like it can only hold 20 total marbles.

Finally, there are 2 pieces of parchment and a quill off to the side. On the first parchment, you can read:

NAME ME
AND TELL ME FROM WHENCE WHICH I CAME:
FROM FIRE
FROM WATER
FROM EARTH
FROM ICE
FROM MAGIC

On the other:
YOU MAY GIVE ME FOUR ABILITIES. THEY MAY BE ATTACKS
OF YOUR OWN MAKING. OR THEY MAY BE SPELLS THAT WILL INCREASE MY STRENGTH, OR DEFENSE.
OR SPELLS THAT WILL DECREASE THE STRENGTH OR DEFENSE OF MY OPPONENT.

You can hear Nimue's voice, but you can't see her.

"Create a great creature of legend, heroes. I look forward to your creativity... but it is not creativity that will win this game. Your creature must survive battle with another. While creativity will serve you well, it is truly strategy that will be your greatest companion. You may choose the creature from the scrolls that will represent you in battle."

...That's an interesting range of choices.

We are not picking any dragons.

[curious glance]

If that's what you prefer. Maybe something like that giant eagle would work better?

As long as it is not a dragon. There is also a giant owl.

Do you think that might be better for this?

They are both— oh! Oh, there is a roc! That is better than any of the other birds.

Well, it looks big, anyway. So what do we want to put with that?

It should be very fast and strong.

[giving a slow nod, chewing on a lip and thinking before answering]

Strength and speed are priorities. Maybe moderate health and defense.

[nod nod, who needs luck]

How should we divide them up? 15, 15, 10 and 10? Or higher?

I like it -- nice and balanced. That kind of approach is what has allowed the X-wing to remain the main superiority fighter for the New Republic and Galactic Alliance for decades.

That balance does well for dragons, too. I am a heavyweight, but I am faster than the rest of them.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone pushes one statistic as far as it can go, to try and get an edge. But it's important to be able to take a hit, too.

Pushing one stat will not do any good; they are probably balanced against each other, with one stat being weak to the others.

Besides, we could never guess the strength of who we'll go up against.

So which element do you prefer?

I would like at least one defensive, though -- the ability to anticipate attacks has always helped me.
