This area seems to be primarily carved out of wood, the tech level dropping significantly from the surroundings. But the level of detail is intricate, and it's no hole in the workshop - the area is huge, and the carver has been working for a long time. The floors are woodpanel, worn in some pathways but well polished. The roof is thatched and scaffolding supports strong, sturdy beams. A kitchen is underway in warm tones of stone and brick, and the air smells good - probably all the woodcarvings.
And there are plenty of projects. Some of the projects look odd, perhaps serving specific functions. But there are carvings of swords and shields, a great large dog, a bed, a suit of armor.
And the artist sure looks like you. He's whittling away at the kitchen counter, which serves double as his core carving station.
"... Shit, uhhh, I think we have an emergency drill or something for those," he mutters. "Augh, whatever, it'll be fine if it's you guys. The boss is gonna be so grumpy..."
"They can shut the whole place down! It gets in the way of everyone's work."
He sees where you're looking and holds it out. It's an arrangement of wood panels, basically a roofing design.
"Pretty cool, right? I jut got clearance to reinforce the ceiling my way. It'll be totally watertight and hold up against the nasty weather, and still let the place breathe, you know? Mithos is working on a lightning rod."
"We kinda just run ourselves. Me, Faith and Selenia are the only ones with clearance still, though I think Yuri may be working on it. Uhh," he scrunches up his face." "If you wanna know who gives clearance, that's a tough question."
"Well, sometimes security hauls someone off - I mean, Selenia couldn't build here for ages. But usually this place is pretty open for anyone to just get to work. Most people when they lose clearance just leave whatever they built here, but people who stick around and really dig in stay to maintain even after they lose clearance.
So, even though the boss is upstairs, he's not really in charge." Fetch grins. "But you can visit him if you want, the more people who visit the better."
Fetch shrugs. "I've never been down there myself. If you want to get rid of something you just chuck it in there and forget about it. It's so deep you don't even hear anything hit the ground."

"That's new."
"What?" Dawn says.
"You haven't noticed?..." Dusk sighs. "Maybe because they're not covered in grease..."

Is there anything in here I can help out with, while I'm visiting? Who's the boss?

Spark gets bossed around even in his own heart, huh? That makes perfect sense for him.
So that's upstairs — what's down in that pit?
no subject
"That's the garbage chute."

. . . I can see all you guys are busy. Need some help cleaning up down there?

Got it. Do you have any rope around?
no subject
There is definitely rope in the workshop. Fetch looks like he's hesitating.
