Both the writing desk and the scalpel are in a surgeon's possession, and used for his dissections of bodies: the latter for bodies of flesh and the former for bodies of words.

A croquet mallet is like a rock when you wish to strike another. A similarity between a rock and the roquet action, as it were.

Only one—in the proper suit: hearts; a chest doesn't need more than one heart, and there is only one Knight of Hearts per deck.
If one prefers to have a greater number of knights, then it may be four to a chest as there are four to chess.

Two, to begin with. However, if she breaks in the heels, pulls on the tongues, wears down their soles... more may become required.

In the preparation of a mock turtle soup made with calf and oysters, not a single turtle is required. But if one finds a turtle that is crying, as they are known to do on occasion, then they've oyster, turtle, and a bowl (from the shell) all at once.
