PLANTS

A A mixed-fruit tree! But like, instead of flowers to fruits, it grows candied versions of the fruits before they mature into the final actual fruit. We were thinking apples, oranges, lemons, and pineapples though why we'd need lemons is beyond me like the tree Beauty's forest had.

B Allow me to bring you into the amazing world of the berries of the straw! These, erm, strawberries are a sweet, succulent little fruit that grows along paths that us heroes and knights normally walk upon! They're viney, low to the ground, and have prickly three-leaved shoots that ... can actually get as big as your head. The berries themselves can be huge! One bite will simply not be enough! The roots go far into the ground, so during a problematic time, a storm, fire or a winter, they can just grow back again! It's magic! They seed themselves through the berries that feed almost every animal! Even bears. And us too, of course. They're sweet and delicious. They grow super tall, maybe if two of me were to stand on the other's head! They produce small little white flowers before they explode into gianormous berries.

C Conductivines are thin but sturdy vines with metallic cores, capable of carrying an electrical current across long distances without being dangerous to handle. They are prolific but unobtrusive, disinclined to choke out other plantlife, and thrive best in climes with moderate sun and precipitation levels (though the species is reasonably hardy and adaptable to extremes, as well). The vines produce large, round, dishlike leaves; small white flowers and small, thick-skinned gold pods that harvest and store solar energy. Pods can be used as crude batteries if one has an appliance modified to be compatible with them, and produce a bright flash of light and heat if the outer skin of the pod is broken. The flowers are good in tea and can soothe sore throats; the leaves and stems are edible and taste like mild garlic; and the metallic core of the vine, once extracted, can be manipulated like wire (with thicker cores obtained from more mature plants.) The vine can be easily propagated via planting whole pods or from cuttings.

D Cherry-apple trees are very tall, so they can compete with the other trees. They grow fruit that is the size of an apple, but in bunches and red like cherries. It takes like apple and has seeds like an apple, not a pit like a cherry. They're also great to climb, so you can easily pick the fruit.

E The Relaxicus Maximus is a fast-growing plant that thrives most in the sunlight. What makes it unique is the growth formation of this vine-like plant; it tends to grow in a wide line between the trunks of trees or sturdy branches, up to four feet wide, tangling itself together in an almost woven pattern as it does. The plant also has a unique elasticity to it, making it strong enough to easily support human weight. It tends to be super comfortable (just, wow, talk about comfort) and to grow in breezy, quiet parts of the forest.

F Coffee trees are medium-sized trees with dark brown bark and glossy green leaves. When the bark is cut, they produce a dark sap that tastes like coffee, with similar effects. Typically the sap flows the strongest at dawn, but it can be collected by hanging a bucket under the cut. The exact flavor varies depending on light levels and soil. Coffee fruit are sweet and creamy, so can be added to the sap for people who don't want to drink coffee black.

G The blueberry pancake bush is a short, flowering shrub that comes back into bloom every year. It's about a foot tall in the wild, but can grow higher if someone decides to cultivate it. The leaves of the bush are evergreen, while the flowers it produces are white and pink, and shaped like bells. The only thing that makes this different from a normal blueberry bush is that it's not fruit growing from the branches alone, but fluffy, blueberry-filled pancakes.

H The Morning Joy doesn't look like much as it grows, just a tangle of leaves with faint bristles on them, with several vines that turn into fruit, then blossoms. The leaves, however, are extremely delicious, and quite fibrous when prepared through frying or boiling. The flowers provide a great deal of calcium, and the berries are a rich fruit that can also be used a a syrup if stewed. Generally considered something of a nutritional supplement more than a food, but still fairly filling.

I The wax-vine is a plant that grows up the sides of trees, trying to get close to the sun. Its leaves are dark and if you pick them at midnight they can be used to cure burns. But the leaves aren’t the most special thing about it. The wax-vine needs a lot of light to flower and spread, but doesn’t get a lot of sun because it’s shady in the forest, and also the darkness came and made things worse. “Darkness ruins everything” fits Aather’s big theme, right? Right, that makes this on-trend...! After the darkness came, the vine had almost died out in this forest. But one day a phoenix came and made a nest where the vine was thickest. Because the vine was so waxy, it didn’t catch on fire when the phoenix rested in it. Naturally, all the other phoenixes started resting in the vine, too. Then, one day, a phoenix burst into flame while it was curled up in the vine. It gave off so much light and heat that the vine burst into flower right then and there, even more beautifully than it ever had before, and spread seeds all around it so lots of new vines grew.

J A single large tree, thick trunk, reaching high into the sky. Climbing to the top would take an extreme tree climber because of how tall it is! It would probably take fifteen people together with hands holding to wrap themselves around the base of the trunk as well.

Inside the branches is an assortment of meats, fruits, veggies and other foodly types of things. However, to actually get any of it, you have to hug the tree and a random object will fall from its branches. You can get one item a day!

K The Dazzelingua Beauty-Vine is a flowering vine that thrives in environments high in human folly, which it feeds on as ordinary plants feed on sunlight. As such, it is an inevitable inhabitant of Aather. Under ordinary circumstances, it grows up walls and tree trunks as a slim green vine with small blue flowers. When it detects a terrible idea being hatched in its vicinity, however, it begins to blossom wildly and release a sweet scent in the direction of the source of the idea. When the hapless victim catches sight of the Dazzelingua, they are struck dumb by the rainbow beauty of its blooming flowers! At this time, temporarily frozen in place by the beauty before them, they are forced to contemplate just why their idea was so stupid in the first place, while the Dazzelingua feeds. It is what they call a mutually beneficial relationship.

L Lotus flowers are classy, pretty, flowers that float on water. They're decorative, easy to grow at home and don't require a ton of maintenance. And when you pick 'em up and pull back the petals, you'll find the tastiest, smokiest whiskey you can think of at their center.

M Any (Fruit) Flavor Bananas: But only fruit. Bananas are the easiest to produce other flavors with, so the bananas are a range of flavors. Red bananas are strawberry-flavored, while green bananas are pineapple flavored. By necessity, these bananas are always ripe for the picking. Yellow are your average banana. Orange are orange-flavored. Brown bananas are coconut-flavored. These bananas grow high in the trees where the sunlight easily reaches them, and they can always be reached from any cabin placed in the canopy.

N The hyphora is a hardy, fast-growing plant capable of self-pollination. The seeds are carried by the wind and take root in fertile or semi-fertile soil in sun or shade. The leaves are a deep pink at sexual maturity, and the plant is well-known for the berries, which are large and rich in nutrients even in more desolate conditions. The seeds are capable of surviving digestion and spread themselves in this manner. The flowers produced are five-petaled and span a range of colors. At the height of maturity, a grown hyphora plant can reach to approximately mid-shin length on a human leg, starting from the sole of the foot.

ANIMALS

1 Bears are small, fuzzy creatures that usually stand between 1'-2' max at their adult height, which they typically reach in about a year. They are incredibly friendly, affectionate creatures who absolutely do not bite or lurk behind people in vulnerable positions ever. They maintain an herbivorous diet of plants, plants, and more plants. Perhaps the most unique thing about bears (scientific name: Ursinius Cuddlius) are the strong, iridescent wings sprouting from their backs, allowing them flight at impressive speeds! In fact, when not munching on vines and be(a)rries, the bear's favorite hobby seems to be barreling into its bear-friends and bear-family via flight for some serious snuggles. They tend to live in groups, occupying caves during the rainy season and spending their time perched high in trees when weather is more favorable, and are often mistaken for stuffed toys.

2 Wild chickens are small fowl which roam through and nest in forested terrain. They prefer dense bushes to lay their eggs in. They're relatively easily domesticated and trainable within a limited range; they're known to learn simple commands. As such, they're often used to carry messages short distances. Their feathers are surprisingly bright, leaving them with poor camouflage. Historically, these feathers are used for a variety of arts.

3 Moose are large land mammals that are part of the deer family. The males have really big leaf-shaped antlers, while the females generally don't. They live in forests that run from temperate to nearly arctic. They eat plants, and are usually eaten by humans, bears, and wolves. Moose usually live alone and move around pretty slowly. But if you startle one, they can move pretty fast. Sometimes the Canadian ones drop a bottle of maple syrup before they run away . . . or charge you, if you're really unlucky.

4 Rabbits are small mammals dwelling in numerous habitats, including the forest. The male is called a buck and the female a doe. Rabbits are around 20-50 cm in length and 0.5-2 kg in weight. The rabbits of the Black Woods are famed for their intensely soft white fur and their intense red eyes. The long ears of the rabbit are well known, but in this particular species, they seem to have earned them a reputation as listeners -- or perhaps that's the personality of the rabbits. They seem fascinated by speech and will spend a long time sitting companionably with an individual as they talk. It's unknown if these rabbits understand what's being said, but they're known to be empathetic creatures.

5 The phoenix is a kind of bird from Earth. It’s bright red and gold and warm to the touch, and every now and then it bursts into flame and a cute baby phoenix pops out of the ashes -- cheep cheep cheep ah I’m covered in gray dirt cheep, or something like that. For most of its life, it sings hopeful things about light and warmth and looking forward to things, and when it’s ready to die it keeps singing about burning brightly even through despair, which is an important song that people should remember in games. If you tell a phoenix a happy story, it will drop a feather in your hand, and the feather will keep you warm until sunrise. If you tell a phoenix a sad story, it will cry a little extra alcohol into the nearest flower, but the flowers will come later in the food section, so be patient for now, alright? I’m already doing you a big favor by creating the greatest ecosystem ever, so you have to wait until I’m ready to explain things! Anyway. Once, all the phoenixes were unhappy and tired because everywhere they tried to lie down caught fire in the middle of the night… but this entry is actually a happy story in disguise, and it’s a phoenix’s favorite happy story in the whole world.

6 A tree fox. They're about the size of a regular fox with the same coat colors, but they dwell in the branches of trees and can climb them easily. They can also leap from tree to tree as long as the range is close enough! They're the ones responsible for dropping random food items to the people who hug the large tree mentioned above.

7 The Fierce-faced Truthivorous Lion is a very large, golden-furred feline with a magnificent silky mane seen in both males and females. It has powerful claws and dreadful sharp teeth, and if angered, it may pose a threat indeed. However, though it may feed on animals and people, by nature it prefers to devour statements of truth. When it meets any being capable of speech, it roars mightily to demand that they speak some truth about themselves to give it sustenance.

8 Dogs are commonly known as man's best friend, with good reason. They're usually fun, loyal fellas who like to hang around people. The shaggy labrador in particular, with its grinning face, always friendly, always happy for company. When you scratch it, all the fleas in its fur shake loose and turn into cashews that you can eat. When you feed it scraps of food, it gives you gummy snakes.

9 Song Birds: So, song birds are small birds, maybe about four-inches long, that really like to chirp. It sounds a lot like their namesake, actually, where it’s almost musical. They like to get up with the sun, and announce their presence to the world. They come in the full color spectrum, everything from Carnelian orange to Sterling silver. Generally they like to hang out on branches together, huddling together for warmth in the lazy afternoons. They feed mostly on berries and small grubs and bugs they can find. Oh, and they love anything like ticks and mosquitoes. They build small nests, and have around three to four chicks. The colors of the chicks are random, so even if you get two Sapphire blue birds together, their offspring could be totally different colors. They’re fast flyers, and they like to dart through the branches of large trees. When the darkness shows up, or any other enemy for that matter, you can see them all flutter quickly from the trees and across the sky. They usually keep their distance, but don’t mind the company of people.

10 A woldren, a creature able to defend itself against the fiercest of predators. The woldren is sociable with other species, but vicious when attacked. The woldren has three sexes, the third of which carries the young to term and is capable of procreating without sexual contact as well as storing the genetic material of male woldren to ensure the longevity and diversity of the species. The woldren is a furred, mammalian quadruped with venomous spines along its back and on each paw, capable of great feats of flexibility. The woldren may be befriended, but not tamed, and the vibrations it produces are soothing to the human ear. The patterns on a woldren's fur vary greatly in shade and pattern. The woldren thrives on vegetable matter and small arthropods, but is capable of going for up to a month without consuming nutrients in times of famine or drought.

11 Birds. They're uh, they're colorful! Sixteen different colors that correspond with the teams, including the knight teams. And each color of bird has its own accessory:
Coral - masks
Ruby - collars
Jasper - hats
Citrine - boots
Carnelian - belts
Tiger's Eye - neckties
Heliodor - slippers
Peridot - crowns
Emerald - capes
Turquoise - sunglasses
Sapphire - scarves
Iolite - bracelets
Amethyst - glasses
Kunzite - necklaces
Sterling - bandanna
Onyx - helmet
Just one accessory per type of bird, and obviously they're all bird-sized. And because they're well-dressed birds, we're calling them Gentlebirds. Like gentlemen, but birds! Also they're made out of sewing supplies and flowers.

12 Let me tell you about the adventure bears! These beasts, covered in masses of fur ranging in a variety of camouflagable colors, are large and enjoy the company of both Tavros and picnic baskets. Generally they tend to look ferocious, with rows of sharp teeth! Rawr! But they're really very friendly, and tend to mostly keep to themselves. They're one of the main staples of food for dragons. Such beasts have been known to smell out the other beasts from miles away! It's truly a wonder of nature! When in contact with a bear, the best thing to do is put on a jaunty tune to deter it's attention span. Many bears have been ridden in the past to great battle, and can be domesticated under the right conditions. They make their homes in the quaint, quiet trees of the forest, bundled in caves like big furry, gross beddings. When it gets ultra cold outside, much like it is in winter, they all just go to sleep. Generally they graze on scraps, small creatures that other teams possibly make-up, cakes and berries!

13 The armetallo is a plated animal that creates dens and tunnels along with various rudimentary computer components using the cores of conductivines and other organic materials. It's not impossible for humans to gather these parts and assemble them into a functional computer. Conductivines also grow well around armetallo lairs. They are edible but difficult to capture and prepare due to their speed and plating; their meat tastes like venison. They are intelligent enough to be trained, but not sentient.

14 Flying pigs live in herds (or flocks?) in the forest. They eat things on the forest floor, and roost in trees at night. They're very tasty, since they have bacon, and ham, and wings and all kinds of pig things. They can be hard to hunt, since they are big and the boy pigs have tusks, and they don't want to be eaten, but with a team effort or a good weapon, you can have pig for dinner.

FOOD

O The wax-vine’s flowers are yellow-gold. They’re long and thin and trumpet-like, about the size of your finger, and grow in circular clusters, like little suns. If you touch them, they’re warm and a little feathery, like a phoenix is. If you eat them raw, it turns out they’re like a solid form of cinnamon whiskey in the shape of a flower… who the hell do you think is writing this, anyway? You should have expected this from the first sentence! Honestly. Also, if you put them in something you’re cooking, it’s like adding cinnamon, which will at least improve that boring oatmeal. Just don’t pick all of them at once, or there won’t be any more flowers, or vines, or phoenixes, because that’s how ecosystems work… anyway, what are you still doing reading this? Get to work and make this real already!

P Alcohol fruits! They look just like regular fruits and they taste like regular fruits, but these fruits are filled with alcohol of all kinds.

Also available in the large tree at request.

Q The "tea biscup" is a cup made entirely of biscuit, with little roses painted in sweet icing on the outside. Within it there is always a delicate yet strong blend of tea. Though you would expect the biscuit to grow soggy in time, it is instead sustained in its crunchiness by all the hope and determination present in Aather, and therefore never does.

R Bacon is a type of crunchy, smokey tasting, delicious food. Actually, it's the best damn thing in the known — and unknown, pretty sure — universe. It usually grows on trees, and if it's been sunny enough, you get a good crop of bacon with a side of grilled cheese.

S Milk Carton Weed: Growing low in the forest, these are as advertised: they come as milk cartons. Sometimes, you see the face of a lost one on them, someone who's been lost in the book, or someone you remember from home, or sometimes it's just someone you miss and haven't seen for a while. But the milk inside is good, if a little warm. It doesn't spoil, so you'll want to chill it before you drink them.

T This food, which remains unnamed, is both sweet and nutritious. It is created by crushing hyphora berries into juice and mixing it with other substances to create a chewy edible.

U The food-thing is ~inspired~ by that vine in the Ring, except it only grows fast-food. So like, burgers and nuggets and french fries, with soda and milkshakes in little leafy-cups or something.

V Do you know what bacon is? No? That's truly awful! Bacon is the most delicious thing in the Nine Realms! It's quite a versatile, meaty dish that can be prepared in all fashions. It can be baked, grilled, or fried! It can be added to anything to make it delicious! You can add it to those round Italian pastries, or possibly to a pie, and you can even test the depth in fry to make it crispy perfection. You can even add it to this wonderful dish known as the "bacon sandwich," which, essentially, is delicious and amazing bacon between two pieces of toasted bread with the sweet tomato condiment of ketchup! This bacon is grown high in the branches of everyone's team trees, and is a bit difficult to get to, 'less you know how to properly pick it. Snipping the twig closely to the edge of the bacon (which is rolled tightly in a twirly fashion) is recommended, as the rest of the plant can be quite bitter. Alas, the bacon is the only good part. Vote for bacon for all of your hunger needs!

W The jouleberry is a high-energy fruit that is both delicious and nutritional. It has electric properties and thus tastes a little like pop rocks when you eat it. It grows in bushes near the ground so it should be easy to harvest; harvesting is easier at night as the berries glow faintly. Despite being light they are very filling. Can be made into jam; keep well when dried; good in pies and tarts.

X Pepperoni pizza is a dish made of flattened circles of cooked dough with tomato sauce, melted cheese and cooked pepperoni slices on top. The dough is crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. The pizzas can be cut into slices for sharing. They simply appear from place to place, seeming not to grow from anything.

Y A puff nut is a large nut, about the size of an egg, that's a warm brown in color with a very hard shell. They typically grow on the low branches of trees, in clusters of three to five nuts. Cracking open the shell's not an easy task, since you have to manage to crack open the nut without squishing the contents, but if you can manage that you'll find a large, soft light brown seed inside that looks, feels, and tastes like a puffy pastry. In the center of this seed is sweet, white cream that melts in your mouth when you eat it. A delicious treat on the go, for a little extra work.

Z Mayonnaise is a stable emulsion of oil, egg yolks and either vinegar or lemon juice. It is a thick and creamy sauce or condiment usually ranging in color from white to pale yellow. It adds a burst of flavor that seems to compliment any food it's put with. It wells up in natural pools where underground oil and vinegar streams mix with wild eggs. Depending on the plant life around where it wells up, it can take on several herbal flavors as well. Legend has it that mayonnaise applied directly to an injury speeds healing -- whether or true or not it has the side-effect of making you delicious.

λ Noodles. All kinds of noodles. Long noodles, thin noodles, fried noodles, noodles in soups or sauce . . . basically all kinds of noodles. It's a good staple food.

Ω Miso is a traditional seasoning, a thick paste used for sauces and spreads, pickling vegetables or meats, and mixing with dashi soup stock to serve as miso soup. In the Black Woods, it is found within the buds of certain bushy plants, which can be squeezed to harvest the miso. Miso is typically salty, but its flavor and aroma vary based on the soil where this plant is grown. Different varieties of miso have been described as salty, sweet, earthy, fruity, and savory. It is high in protein and rich in vitamins and minerals.
