It's when someone uses a picture or a word to mean something other than what it looks like. Like, you've got the car there. That could represent travelling, wanderlust, all that jazz. Dream's all about desires, so it's very unlikely that a car is just a car in one of his games.

It's a car. It's got an engine in it, so when you get in it and turn it on you can make it move and drive it around.
